The ‘90s and early 2000s blessed us with sensational artists, but only a few remain timeless and have a lasting influence today.
ONE IN A MILLION
Singer and actress, Aaliyah Dana Haughton, was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Detroit, Michigan. The artist first gained recognition at the age of 10, on the television show Star Search and signed a record deal when she was only 12 years old. By the age of 15, she released her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number (1994) sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum. In 1996, Aaliyah worked on her Sophomore album, One in a Million with producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott which sold three million copies in the United States and over eight million copies worldwide.
MULTI-TALENTED
Aaliyah debuted in her first film as an actress in 2000 in the box office hit Romeo Must Die alongside her co-star Jet Li. Her single “Try Again” was a part of the film’s soundtrack and topped the charts on the Billboard Hot 100. Subsequently, Aaliyah starred in Queen of the Damned in 2001. The summer of 2001, she released her third album which topped the charts on the Billoard 100. The album produced the singles “Rock The Boat”, “More Than A Woman”, and “We Need A Resolution” featuring Timbaland.
STYLE ICON
Aaliyah’s style remains relevant in today’s fashion. She was a chameleon who looked just as luminous in a pair of baggy pants as she did in a red carpet dress. She went against the wave and made the oversized, baggy look cool when skin-tight everything was the trend. From her “tomboy” style to her signature makeup look, her influence is unmatched and there’s no sign of it stopping soon.
LEGACY
The music industry lost Aaliyah, a promising young icon, in 2001 due to a plane crash in the Bahamas. Though she was only 22-years-old, she made an incredible impact on music, culture, and fashion.
