Berry was first introduced to show business through beauty pageants and modeling. Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever (1991) and starring with Eddie Murphy in Boomerang (1992), were the roles that helped introduce her to the world. Other hit films in the 90s would follow for the rising star, including The Program, The Flintstones and Executive Decision. Her beauty and onscreen charisma carried much of her work in the 1990s. The television film, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999), showed what a talented actress she was. It was the first project where she was the lead, and playing a real life actress, who struggled with her mixed race in Hollywood, was fitting for Berry.

The critical acclaim she received for Dorothy Dandridge led to her being offered more substantial parts. She would play Storm in the comic book film franchise, X-Men. Berry would take on the role Jinx in the James Bond picture, Die Another Day. Berry would also play one of the most iconic comic book villains of all-time, Catwoman. The film was a critical and box office disaster, but Berry was one of the first to portray a superhero character in multiple films. She was now considered an A-List movie star.

Halle Berry would earn the biggest achievement of her career in 2001. Berry would star in the drama, Monster’s Ball. Her powerful performance would earn her an Academy Award win. Berry would become the first African American to win the Academy Award for best actress. Berry is one of the most important and celebrated actresses of all-time.

Halle Berry has faced all the obstacles that come with being a woman of color in Hollywood. She has been typecast because of her good looks and has faced harsh criticism for some of the projects that didn’t work, like Catwoman.
