Michael Jordan and the legendary cartoon character, Bugs Bunny, have a long and impactful history. They have appeared together in commercials, on products and in a blockbuster film. Learn more about the Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny relationship.
Bugs Bunny
Bugs first appeared in an animated feature in 1938. That version of the Bunny was slightly different than the wise cracking hare we know now from Looney Tunes cartoons. The official debut of Bugs Bunny as we know him would be 1940. He would star in countless animated shorts, series, and animated films.
MJ
In 1992, Bugs would join Michael Jordan for a historic Super Bowl ad.
HARE JORDAN
The Air Jordan VII introduced a new ad partner for Michael Jordan. Spike Lee moved aside as Bugs Bunny became the brand's endorser. The ad campaign was one of the most unforgettable ones for Jordan. The mixing of live action and animation was ambitious for a television commercial in 1992.
The pair would reteam the very next year for the Air Jordan VIII. Another legendary Super Bowl commercial was made, and it would solidify the MJ and Bugs relationship.
Space Jam
The film Space Jam was released in theaters in 1996. The film was an instant classic and is one of Michael Jordan’s most iconic moments away from the basketball court.
Michael Jordan plays himself in the film and interacts with cartoon aliens and the beloved Looney Tunes characters. Other classic characters to appear included Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.
The film was a huge box office success. It would inspire the LeBron James remake/sequel, Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” is worn by MJ in the movie. MJ would wear the shoes on the court in 1995, before the film was released. It would not be until 2000 that
sneakerheads had the chance to purchase their own pair of the Space Jam 11. The beloved shoe has received retro releases over the years since its OG release over 20 years ago.
Dynamic Duo
Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny had a great run in the 1990s. The partnership helped to reestablish Bugs Bunny as a classic cartoon character. It also led to the creation of memorable commercials, products, and the iconic Space Jam.
