Deadpool is one of the most popular comic book heroes in our culture. The Deadpool movies have helped to elevate him to one of Marvel’s top stars. The wisecracking antihero is returning to movie theaters this Summer in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Standout
Deadpool was created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld. The character first appeared in The New Mutants #98 (1991). What makes Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, unique is he is aware that he is in a comic book. This allows him to poke fun of the medium and the other legendary heroes he goes up against. When he debuted, he was viewed as a villain, but would eventually morph into an antihero. He is a mercenary with martial artist skills and a mastery of swords and firearms. His accelerated healing factor makes him basically invincible. His healing power was grafted into his DNA. “The Merc With A Mouth” is a one of a kind superhero.
Hollywood
Star Ryan Reynolds wanted to bring Deadpool to life in a movie for years before he got a chance in 2009 to portray Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The film was critically panned by critics and fans. It was a box office success, however. Reynolds was not allowed by the studio to play a comic book faithful version of the character. The Deadpool in Wolverine did not get a chance to wear the costume and had traits that were not consistent with the comic origins of the colorful mercenary.
Another Shot
Despite the terrible experience of appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds was determined to play Deadpool again. He would campaign for years before getting the chance to bring Deadpool back in his own film in 2016. This time, the character was true to the source material. The film was a huge hit and Reynolds was perfect. He would bring the comic book hero back to the screen in Deadpool 2, which was another hit.
Deadpool & Wolverine
It took six years, but Deadpool is returning to the big screen in Deadpool & Wolverine. It is a nice full circle moment for Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool since they first appeared on screen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
